This lot comes from our origin partners, Raw Material, who are a social enterprise that maximises producer profits through the coffee you buy. They currently work in Burundi, Columbia, Mexico, Rwanda and Timor-Leste, and you can expect to see more of these coffee's in the not so distant future!
Izuba (“sun” in the Kirundi language) is located in Kayanza province in the north of Burundi. The station produces all the traditional processes; washed, honey and naturals, and in recent years, anoxic washed and natural lots. The station purchases coffee cherries from over 2,000 families that reside across three surrounding hills; Kigeri, Mugoyi, and Ryamukona More than 300 female coffee producers sell their harvests to Izuba. We are thrilled to present their coffees as the Ishurwe Women's Group coffee, which means flower in Kirundi. Coffee is a critical part of Burundi’s economy, many Burundians rely on coffee for their income. If the buying power of the specialty coffee market can point more toward Burundian coffees, then dramatic change is possible.
Buying Burundian coffees for your roastery will drive this. Increased demand for coffees produced at Izuba will fund vital nurseries to replace the old coffee trees. These seedlings will replace old trees over time, and increase harvests and stability for producers. Alongside social premiums, larger harvests mean more income and better livelihoods from coffee for those who need it most.
“At Izuba, we continue to fulfil export commitments and deadlines more efficiently than previous years, having changed the dry mill we use, as well as reporting systems.
We increased our processing capacity by installing new tables, a pre-drying shed, floating tanks, and a new pulping machine at Izuba. Farmers continue to be paid some of the highest bonus payments in the area; and country for that matter.”
